Editorial

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I welcome you to the first issue of 3CMedia: Journal of Community, Citizen’s and Third Sector Media and Communication.

Whether you are a researcher, a student, policy-maker or media practitioner I hope you find the articles published here to be excellent and useful guides to contemporary debates and research challenges in community-based media and communication.

The need for a journal such as 3CMedia has been under consideration for a number of years. In 2000, Queensland University of Technology and Australian Key Centre for Culture and Media Policy researchers joined with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia to establish the academic stream within the CBAA’s annual conference. This initiative provides a forum for dialogue between researchers and practitioners on current research and research agendas, and has been well-received by both groups.

The work of many interesting and important Australian and international researchers, covering many facets of community, citizen’s and non-government, not-for-profit (third sector) media, has been discussed and debated in this forum. Some of the research papers offered to the CBAA conference are available through the Australian Community Broadcasting Series, an occasional series which was developed and hosted by CBOnline for this purpose. In 2003 the decision was taken build a refereed scholarly publication from this foundation. An editorial infrastructure was put in place, the journal’s scope was clarified and internationalised, and 3CMedia was born.

Production of this issue would not have been possible without the terrific editorial work of 3CMedia reviewers or the website design and development work of CBOnline. Special thanks are due to Nicholas Boyakovsky and Mia Lauze who have made going ‘live’ possible.
