Northern Midlands Community Broadcasters (Heart FM), formed out of a need they saw the Midlands had for a local radio station. In the region, smaller communities have been merged together under larger council districts, creating fragmentation and a sense of disunity in the broader community. We believe that a local radio station will help to form a common voice over the region that both represents and promote it, to itself and a tourist audience.
Current members of NMCB made a submission that formed part of the consideration for the ABA’s LAP. A space on the band was created for a station in the Midlands, at which point NMCB put in an application for a TCBL.
Since 30th November 2001 Northern Midlands Community Broadcasters have been operating Heart FM on a Temporary Community Broadcasting Licence, based on the recommendations in the LAP, to a potential audience of around 10,000 people. Our full time licence took effect on May 1st 2003. The station has been operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from its studios in Gordon St Poatina.
Heart FM has an easy listening "Hits & Memories" format with music from the 60's to current with special features sprinkled throughout the day.
This includes Tassie Mornings (9-10am) featuring interviews with local personalities, businesses and politicians keeping the audience stimulated with the current issues.and others who are making a contribution in the local community.
