Dusty Radio 104.5FM - From little things big things grow…
Coober Pedy, situated 835 kilometres north of Adelaide, is a remote opal-mining town in outback South Australia. With a population of 3800, the community comprises of people from over forty five nationalities. The town's geographic isolation has seen the emergence of community radio as an important outlet for Coober Pedy's many voices.
Established in 1997, Dusty Radio all started with schoolteacher Bob Pryce, now Station Manager, designing a media studies course for high school students broadcasting on a narrowcast license. Dusty FM has now grown into Coober Pedy's very own community radio station, run completely by volunteers, on an aspirant broadcasting license. As we are situated on the local school grounds there are many young people involved in programming as well as a diverse group of community members.
